“Homeopathy can cure the effects of an infective agent, even if that infective agent is no longer present.”
This is a follow-up post to the previous one. In it we discussed what CIRS is & what conventional treatments are available for it. In this one, we will discuss how homeopathy can be used.
Before we begin, a little history lesson. Medicine diverged about a century ago into two schools, the conventional school embraced ‘germ theory’, the alternative schools embraced ‘terrain theory’. For example, if you go to a doctor with a sore throat, he might swab and discover you are positive for Strep bacteria and prescribe antibiotics. Now instead go see a homeopath and they will take your case, looking at lots of other symptoms alongside just the throat ones and prescribe an indicated remedy. The doctor is using Germ Theory, the homeopath is using Terrain Theory. What if BOTH of them are correct?
Here’s another example to illustrate what I mean. A highly stressed and hardworking businessman complains of a burning pain in his stomach. He’s also suffering from acid reflux and sometimes there is blood in his stool. Understandably worried, he goes to his doctor for a diagnosis and discovers that he has stomach ulcers. The doctor tells him that these are usually caused by a bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori (the germ) and prescribes an antibiotic. This will almost certainly rapidly help his symptoms, but will it ‘cure’ him of the susceptibility to stomach ulcers in the future? Obviously not.
Lets say that he instead goes to a homeopath. The homeopath will take his case, looking at the stomach symptoms, but ALSO at other aspects of his life. The fact he is stressed, works long hours, has poor sleep, using coffee & alcohol to get through his day (the terrain). In this case he might be prescribed a remedy called Nux Vomica. This doesn’t act like an antibiotic, but it can greatly alleviate the symptoms & lead to someone taking a more relaxed approach to life. This would result in less susceptibility to stomach ulcers & his body healing itself of the H. Pylori. This typically takes considerably longer than the antibiotic, perhaps up to 6 months of treatment.
What if there’s a third way?
How I’d approach this case: I’d still prescribe the Nux Vomica, but alongside it I’d also prescribe the nosode of Heliobacter Pylori. In other words, I’m going after the germ AND the terrain at the same time. It’s been my experience that this approach is faster & more effective than merely giving an indicated remedy, and more permanent than simply treating the bacteria.
Let’s have another example (we are getting to discussing treatment for CIRS eventually I promise!). Someone is living in a mouldy house. They start experiencing strange neurological symptoms such as cognitive difficulty, perhaps also physical complaints such as lethargy, asthma, joint pains, wheezing & so forth. Eventually they figure out what’s going on, remediate the mould and are prescribed corticosteroids and anti-histamines. This helps, but many symptoms still persist and they go deeper down the treatment path, having mycotoxin tests and taking ‘binders’ such as activated charcoal, as well as antifungal medications. Over a period of months the symptoms reduce somewhat and the latest mycotoxin test shows their levels are normal again. But here’s the thing, they STILL have the symptoms which are sometimes debilitating, and are badly affected if they have any mould exposure. This is more common than people think. The immune system get’s ‘stuck’, behaving AS IF the bacteria/virus/mould/mycotoxin is still there. Then they come to me.
Remember my quote from the beginning,
“Homeopathy can cure the effects of an infective agent, even if that infective agent is no longer present”
This is one of the magical things about homeopathy. It can correct an immune system that’s still reacting AS IF there’s an infection. Just like in my example above with the stomach ulcers, for this mycotoxin case I would typically prescribe the indicated remedy that would depend on the symptoms AND a nosode remedy made from the mycotoxins. These nosodes are little packets of magic that can help reset the immune system, and so finally resolve the symptoms. The person should also be less susceptible when exposed to mould in the future.
The sharp eyed among you will see that this approach to CIRS is very similar (it’s the same!) as my approach to PANS/PANDAS cases. That’s because their causes are the same, the immune system is over-reacting to bacteria/viruses/mould, and the homeopathic nosode can help to correct this over reaction.
