No….& yes. I hope that has made things clearer!
In this article I want to explain what homeopathy is, what biomed is & how they can be used together.
Homeopathy.
At it’s core, homeopathy is beautifully simple & based around two simple principles.
- Like Cures Like.
- Minimum Dose.
To treat a fever with homeopathy, you give a remedy made from something that would cause a fever in a healthy person. But you give a very very amount of it.
This based around the assumption that the body is intelligent & self healing, so we listen to what it’s saying & help it heal.
A biomedical doctor or practitioner would likely take a very different approach. They might give antipyretics (anti fever medication), or perhaps supplements such as zinc, magnesium, Vitamin C & D or Elderberry. They can be effective of course, but it’s a different model.
In the above example, the homeopathy can work well alongside the supplements (they can complement each other), but obviously wouldn’t work alongside the antipyretics. In my practice I advise starting with the homeopathy for fevers, and only giving the antipyretics if the homeopathy hasn’t worked and/or the fever is getting dangerously high.
You can see the two extremes of ‘bio med’ in the above example. From supplements to suppressive allopathic medication. Homeopathy can integrate or work alongside the former, it’s antagonistic to the latter.
As I see it, the strength of bio-med is the testing. It’s greatest weakness is also the testing! Let me explain. Testing has been modern Western medicines incredible contribution. Before a diagnosis we can find out exactly what microorganism is causing the symptoms & therefore know the best way to treat it.
“We’ve swabbed your throat Mrs Smith & it’s come back positive for Strep. A. Here is a 7-day course of amoxicillin.”
The bio-medical approach has taken this data-driven approach & applied it to conditions like autism.
“We’ve carried out tests on Johnny and found he has high viral markers for Herpes 1 & Epstein-Barr, signs of inflammation, yeast overgrowth, Lyme markers and heavy metals. We are going to start with a 2-week anti-viral medicine, then anti-fungal, then move on to antibiotics for 2 weeks.”
What tends to happen is: The child shows initial signs of improvement, but then they lose them again. 6 months later there’s another barrage of tests & we find we need another round of anti-virals, antibiotics & anti-fungals. Many patients have started with me after several years of this regimen, with no obvious improvements in their child’s symptoms. Sound familiar to any of you?
Why is this? Because the things being measured aren’t necessarily the CAUSE of your child’s symptoms. The example I always use is candida overgrowth. If they are tested, 90+% of ASD kids will show candida overgrowth. Biomed sees this as something to treat, I see it as a sign there’s something else going on. Typically it suggests high levels of heavy metals. The intelligent self-healing body is USING the candida to protect itself from the metals. What this means is that if you give anti-fungals as part of a biomed approach, the candida will just keep coming back. It resolves when the underlying reason has been addressed & the gut bacteria rebalanced.
People who know me know that my twin specialties are autism & PANS/PANDAS. Most medics won’t even accept that there’s a condition called PANDAS, but if you are lucky to find one, you’ll find a similar ‘biomed’ approach. They’ll test & then prescribe antibiotics for an active infection. The more progressive ones might even prescribe a long course of prophylactic antibiotics to address the chronic situation, even beyond there being an active infection. There will be 3 outcomes:
- The child recovers, the PANDAS symptoms resolve. There’s no relapse (I don’t see these patients in my practice!)
- The child’s symptoms improve whilst on the antibiotics, but recur once the course ends or when they get re-exposed.
- The symptoms either aren’t reduced, or they are temporarily reduced but then recur, even whilst still on the antibiotics.
There are two ways I typically treat a PANDAS case: classical homeopathy where I use the principle of ‘like cures like’ and find the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms being presented (lining things up, extreme fear, anxieties, OCD behaviours, aggression, bed wetting etc) OR ‘like cures like’ where I give a nosode remedy made from the Streptococcus bacteria that is causing the symptoms. This latter is very different than giving antibiotics. What I’m attempting to do with the nosode is to nudge the immune system into dealing appropriately with the bacteria.
“Homeopathy can address the symptoms of an infection, even if the infectious agent is no longer present.”
Louis Klein
The above quote is SO important. What do we do when someone presents with symptoms of an infection, but the test tells us there’s no infection present? Well, we can STILL give the nosode to resolve the symptoms. I think of these cases (which are incredibly common) something similar to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The body DID have an infection & reacted, but now it’s stuck in a loop with the symptoms, even though there’s no longer an infection. Get in touch immediately if this is your experience, homeopathy can resolve this so effectively.
